“The art of design to me is the balance of texture, scale, color and light”

Gary Gibson is an L.A. based interior designer, artist, and product designer.  Having never been able to work within the confines of traditional design or traditional offerings, Gary has forged his own unique path with an approach from the artistic angle: creating spaces that invite, excite and envelop the user.

A native Angeleno, Gary studied at UCLA’S school of Interior Design and opened his own full service residential and commercial design firm in 1981.  His aim is to create interiors that are timeless and classic, but at the same time comfortable and usable, forming “spaces that are not just to be looked at. Contrasting surfaces, colors, and textures that excite the eye are always the goal."  Gary, an accomplished artist in his own right, applies this attitude to his own artwork as well.  Radical colors, and unusual textures and material are trademarks of the dynamic pieces he creates.

That combination of designer and artist seems to be working.  Since opening his doors in the early 80’s, the demand for Gary’s design aesthetic has grown.  Now a renowned designer, his work encompasses residential and commercial spaces in California, Montana, Utah, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, Chicago, Illinois, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

In 2000, Gary launched Gibson Studio, a collection of high end furniture, shown in the Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York markets.  The line incorporates his personal and design aesthetic, utilizing such classic metals as stainless steel and brass; woods from walnut to mahogany; and upholstered pieces that provide the perfect combination of comfort and unique design.  To expand on Gary’s belief that all products are necessary elements to create a comfortable environment, he has added to his repertoire a collection of Tibetan rugs for L.A. based Aga John Rugs.

Gary yearned for an inspiring work environment that could also be accessible to the public; a functional place that is aesthetically pleasing not only to him and his staff, but to all who enter.  Gary opened Gibson, his retail atelier 7 years ago, which put together all the elements of what Gary the artist, interior designer, and product designer are all about.  It is a wonderful collection of objects that are one of a kind, handmade, mass produced, vintage and antique, that inspire Gary and all that visit Gibson.  The ultimate goal is to make their environments a better place to live, work, and play.
